VETAMOX® is an antibiotic agent with a notably broad spectrum of activity against the commonly occurring bacterial pathogens. The novel action of clavulanate extends the spectrum of amoxicillin to embrace a wider range of organisms, including many resistant to other β -lactam antibiotics.

VETAMOX® is bactericidal to a wide range of organisms in vitro including:

Aerobes Streptococcus faecalis

Streptococcus pneumoniae

Streptococcus pyogenes

Streptococcus viridans

Straphlyococcus aureus

Staphylococcus saprophyticus

Staphylococcus epidermidis

Corynebacterium species

Bacillus anthracis

Listeria monocytogenes

Peptococcus species

Clostridium species

Haemophilus influenzae

Escherichia coli

Proteus mirabilis

Proteus vulgaris

Klebsiella species

Salmonella species

Shigella species

Bordetella pertussis

Brucella species

Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Neisseria meningitidis

Vibrio cholerae

Pasteurella septica

Branhamella catarrhalis

Bacteroides species

VETAMOX® is a novel concept in antibiotic therapy. Resistance to many antibiotics is caused by bacterial enzymes which destroy the antibiotic before it can act on the pathogen. The clavulanate in VETAMOX® anticipates this defence mechanism by blocking the β-lactamase enzymes, thus rendering the organisms sensitive to amoxicillin’s rapid bactericidal effect at concentrations readily attainable in the body.

The pharmacokinetics of the two components of VETAMOX® are closely matched. Peak serum levels of both occur about 1 hour after oral administration. The elimination half-lives of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid both range from 60-80 minutes. Following administration approximately 70% of the dose of amoxicillin is excreted as amoxicillin and approximately 30-40% of an oral dose of clavulanic acid is excreted in the urine as clavulanic acid, during the first six hours after administration.

VETAMOX® may be taken at the start of meals with no effect on its absorption. Doubling the dosage of VETAMOX® approximately doubles the serum levels achieved.

VETAMOX® is indicated for the short-term treatment of common bacterial infections such as:

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infection
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections
  • Bone and Joint Infections e.g. osteomyelitis
  • Other Infections e.g. septic abortion, puerperal sepsis, intra-abdominal sepsis, septicaemia, peritonitis, post-surgical infections.

VETAMOX® is indicated for prophylaxis against infection which may be associated with major surgical procedures such as gastro-intestinal, pelvic, head and neck, cardiac, renal, joint replacement biliary tract.

A history of allergic reaction to β-lactam antibiotics e.g. penicillins or cephalosporins.

Dosage and Administration:

VETAMOX® Tablets 625mg: 12.5mg/Kg bodyweight twice daily. Refractory cases; particularly those of the respiratory tract, double the dose rate. Most cases respond in 5-7 days but treatment may be prolonged.

Side Effects: VETAMOX® contains amoxycillin, a semi-synthetic penicillin and has the potential for producing hypersensitivity reactions. If such reaction occurs, administer adrenaline and/or corticosteroids.

Vetamox® Tablets: Protect from light and moisture. Store below 25oC.
