Product:

An aqueous solution of 20mg/ml (2%) lignocaine hydrochloride, an amide type local anaesthetic 100ml 250ml & 500ml.

Action:

Lignocaine achieves its anaesthetic effect by stabilising the membrane of sensory nerve cells. The cellular membrane permeability is decreased, preventing the diffusion of potassium and sodium ions which stimulate the action potential and transmission of impulses. The sensation of pain is removed.

Indications:

Local, regional, and epidural anaesthesia.

Lignocaine may be used by infiltration technique to desensitise tissues in preparation for surgery.

For diagnostic nerve blockade.

For dehorning and develveting procedures.

Dosage:

The dosage required depends on the area to be anaesthetized.

Suggested dosages. (Refer to various texts on anaesthesia for further recommendations.)

Cattle:

Low epidural 4-6ml

High epidural up to 60ml
(Recumbency occurs)

Local infiltration up to 200ml s/c

Dehorning 5-10ml

Paravertebral 10-20ml per nerve

Horses:

Specific nerve blockade 10-20ml

Local infiltration up to 200ml s/c

Sheep:

Epidural 5-10ml

Local infiltration up to 50ml

Dogs:

Specific nerve blockade 1-2ml

Local infiltration up to 30ml s/c

Epidural 1ml/4-5kg

Precautions:

Avoid inadvertent intravenous administration.

Use with caution in patients on beta-adrenergic blocker medication. (Delayed metabolism.)

Comment:

Lignocaine has been used in the emergency treatment of ventricular cardiac arrhythmias in dogs.

An intravenous dose of 2mg/kg every 20-30 minutes has been used, or a loading dose of 2mg/kg has been followed by 50μg/kg/min given by continuous infusion.
