Oxyvet LA is a sterile, aqueous solution containing 200mg/ml oxytetracycline base, in the form of a magnesium complex.
Following deep intramuscular injection, the Oxyvet LA formulation provides sustained therapeutic blood levels of oxytetracycline.
Oxytetracylcine affects rapidly growing organisms, interfering with bacterial protein synthesis by binding to their ribosomes.
Oxytetracycline is a broad spectrum, bacteriostatic antibiotic. Susceptible organisms include gram +ve and gram –ve bacteria, some protozoa, rickettsia, mycoplasmas and chlamydiae.
Oxyvet LA is recommended whenever long term antibiotic treatment or prophylaxis is required, or where repeat dosing is not practical or feasible. Oxytetracycline diffuses widely throughout the body, but achieves highest concentrations in the kidney, liver, lungs and spleen.
- Cattle Oxyvet LA is indicated for the treatment of pneumonia, pasteurellosis, foot-rot, joint infection, actinobacillosis, mastitis and streptothricosis, and for the control of post parturient and post operative infections.
- Sheep Oxyvet LA is indicated for the treatment of pneumonia, mastitis, metritis, foot-rot and streptothricosis.
- Pigs Oxyvet LA is indicated for the treatment of pneumonia, erysipelas, joint infection, mastitis, metritis, agalactia syndrome and pasteurellosis.
Dosage and Administration:
Ensure administration is by deep intramuscular injection into the anterior half of the neck.
General dosage: 1ml per 10kg bodyweight (20mg/kg). To minimize local tissue reaction, it is recommended not to exceed the following amounts at any one injection site.
Due to sustained blood levels, one treatment with Oxyvet LA is usually sufficient, but the dosage may be repeated after approximately 2 days, at the discretion of the veterinarian.
Milk intended for human consumption must be discarded during treatment and for 7 days following the last treatment.
Animal producing meat and offal for human consumption must not be slaughtered during or within 28 days of the last treatment.
Rare anaphylactic reactions have been recorded in calves following use of oxytetracycline injections. Prompt treatment with antihistamines is indicated.
Use of oxytetracycline during the period of tooth development, including late pregnancy, may lead to tooth discolouration.
Oxyvet LA is not recommended for use in horses or donkeys, cats and dogs.
Do not dilute. Store in a cool place.
Protect from light.
